White Dessert
West of the River Nile, you find the Libyan Desert in
Egypt, covering approx. two thirds of the country – nearly
700000 square kilometres.
Deserts can be varied
and not at all boring. Egypt has a vast sand dune field (Great
Sand Sea), the mountainous desert on the plateau Gilf Kebir,
the Black Desert close to Baharia and the White Desert north
of Farafra..
It is truly white and different to the yellow desert elsewhere.
The colour comes from the chalk rock formations being created
by sand storms. It is beautiful to overnight in the desert,
under a clear starry sky, in a landscape reminding of Arctic
regions. The rock formations often look dramatic: large
boulders balancing on a stony pillar.
Our North Africa Tour overnights in the White Desert en
route from Baharia to Kharga. There is the possibility
to participate in a Jeep Tour. As the picture, made by
Birgit Schmieder in April 2007, shows a corral is build
with the motor caravans. After a breathtaking sunset the
day ends with a campfire. Next day the tour group moves on to Kharga which is followed by Luxor and Abu Simbel, truly cultural highlights.

Taster Tour
"Here in the salt-mine, you can lick everything in spite of the guide" said
the young woman on the photo left bottom. Salt salt-mine of Wieliczka
is situated below the small Polish town near Krakow. It belongs
to the UNESCO world cultural heritage. Here,
salt has been extracted without interruption
since the Middle Ages.
It is a fantastic world
of salt, that the miners have built in age-long work. Artificial lakes,
bizarre caves, chapels and cathedrals as
well as life-size figures can be seen.
After visiting the city Krakow in the morning,
the participants of the September taster tour
admired the subsurface world.Already on the next
day, the tour guide Peter Rettau accompanied the
group to Czech Republic. The taster tour only lasts
7 days and provides an inside into a group tour.
It is also suited for employed
persons. The next taster tour takes place in
September 2007.

In the Footsteps
of Marco Polo
Our
Californian tour participant Larry Hoffman provided
this photo
of this year's "On the traces of Marco Polo" tour.
The vehicles of
the participants are loaded on a train platform and
traverse the desert
Gobi on train. The loading of the vehicles takes about
one day and the actual drive another day. In between,
there
are many hours, approx. 2 days waiting time, since
the cargo train has to give way to other trains. An
absolute highlight during the traversing of the Gobi
is the sunrise and sunset in the desert.
For Larry Hoffman
whose vehicle is in the front of the photo it is the
second journey with Perestroika Tours. In September
2005, he left
his house at the Lake Tahoe and travelled across the
USA
and by ship over the Atlantic Ocean to Hausbay.
In spring, he participated in the tour "North
Africa - Near East International".
In Turkey, he joined the "Marco Polo Tour".
His travel experiences are put down in a book.
