CD “Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the horizon” by Yo-Yo Ma
For the so-called Silk Road Project, the Cellist Yo-Yo Ma was joined by various musicians from Iran und Armenia, from India, Japan, Korea und China. Together they travel the Silk Road in a musical way. Next to the classical cello you here the exotic instruments of the region. The music is in parts melancholy in parts very light and makes you want more. This is ideal music for anyone interested in the Silk Road. smr

In the tour booklet we give you some hints on travelling books, which will give you an outline of sights, history and culture. We recommend the standards as well as a visit to your local pedestrian area where bargain travel books are often available. The books we list here are Novels and other literature which we found interesting. Learn more about the people of the countries you visit while being entertained.

We just give a short outline, if you feel you need to know more: just look the books up on the internet. They are quickly found in the online bookshops.

We also appreciate your recommendations.

„Wolves Eat Dogs“ by Martin Cruz Smith Author of "Gorki Park".
The Boss of a rich organization in the new Russia is found dead on the street. Was it really suicide, like some business partner and the police authorities believe? Arkadi Renko starts looking deeper and asks questions. His investigations take him to Chernobyl. There, at the scene of the disasters, surrounded by dead villages and hungry wolves, everything runs differently. It is nearly too late.....

This book really holds you. Apart from the gripping plot the (American!) author manages to shows a rather real impression of the New Russia. Recommended for anyone going to Russia or the Ukraine smr

„Archangel“ by Robert Harris
While in Moscow a former secret service man tells the British historian Fluke Kelso about an unknown notebook belonging to Stalin. This informant is brutally murdered and the story becomes highly intriguing and takes you to Archangel at the White Sea.

„ Pompeji“ by Robert Harris
Harris take the reader to Ancient Rome. Whilst trying to repair a broken aqueduct the engineer Attilus sees the traces of the catastrophe that is so enormous that not even the Roman Empire can stop it.

Whilst we all know that the story ends with the demise of the city, it is still fascinating to see the days and hours prior out of the eyes of normal people. This gives you really a different outlook on disaster and Pompeii.

The English author Robert Harris is well-known for his novels „Fatherland“ and  „Enigma“ both which were turned into movies. smr

„Aachen – Berlin- Königsberg“ by Patricia Clough
» Königsberg 1000 km« - so it says on an old road sign near Aachen. The English  journalist Patricia Clough saw it year ago on one of her first trips to Germany and was curious what it meant. The sign marks the start of the old imperial road no 1, which at one time was the most important connection between the west and the east of Germany and passed through the Weimar Republic as far as the former Ostpreußen (Eastern Prussia). Patricia Clough went time travelling along this road and meets known historical persons as well as un-known fates: spies and knights, prussians and jesters, immigrants and refugees.

The ideal book for all going the route today, i.e. travelling via Frankfurt/Oder to Malbork and Kaliningrad. Short chapters encourage reading and as this is not really a historical book it was both informative as well as entertaining.
